The Ham Radio Model · capture rig

Capture rig dashboard

The capture rig listens to one KiwiSDR channel at a time and moves around the digital-mode watering holes. fldigi decodes the audio one segment behind real time. The rig then pairs the decoded lines into training data for the model. These are my own recordings of the public amateur bands, made through public KiwiSDR receivers. No decoded text leaves the rig except what this page shows. Nothing is edited. Lines that are only noise are left out.

A pair is a line from one station that the rig received more than once, lined up against the best copy. The clean side of the pair is worked out from that best copy, not taken from a published text. So the pairs are training data. They are not an evaluation set.

Decoded, the last three days

These are all the lines the rig decoded that read as traffic, shown segment by segment. Garbled text is included and nothing is edited. A line counts as traffic if most of it is not junk and it has one of two things. One is several recognizable words or pieces of ham shorthand in a row. The other is a callsign with an allocated prefix that appears next to DE or CQ, or appears more than once. On an empty channel, a decoder prints single letters and, now and then, something shaped like a callsign. That is left out, so a quiet segment shows nothing. Each card names the KiwiSDR and the dial frequency. The rig listens to the 3 kHz above the dial, where the watering hole sits.

These are my own recordings of the public amateur bands, made through public KiwiSDR receivers, and they may be shared. Amateur transmissions carry no expectation of privacy. Material contributed by other hams is handled case by case.

The rig publishes a status file every two minutes and rewrites the day files on the same schedule. Both are served through a cache, so a line can show up to five minutes late.
